The Hightstown-East Windsor Historical Society’s annual banquet will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 29th at the Longstreet Library on the Peddie Campus. A buffet lunch will be provided by the Peddie School.

Mark Alan Hewitt, FAIA, will give the annual address. An architect, historian and preservationist who practices in Bernardsville, NJ, Mr. Hewitt will speak on his recent book, The Vintage House: A Guide to Successful Additions and Renovations.

His talk should be of special interest to local residents who are interested in altering historic houses without disturbing their character and pedigree. Mr. Hewitt recently served as a consultant to Rick Pratt, former chairman of the Hightstown Historic Preservation Commission.

Mr. Hewitt has taught architecture at Rice University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is currently an adjunct professor in the art history department at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. His books include The Architect and the American Country House (Yale, 1990), Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Farms (Syracuse, 2001), and Carrere & Hastings, Architects (Acanthus Press, 2006). His latest book, The Vintage House: A Guide to Successful Additions and Renovations, was written with Gordon Bock, the longtime editor of the Old House Journal.

The cost to attend the banquet is $35. Checks should be made out to the H.E.W. Historical Society and sent to Shirley Olsen, 6 Farr Ave., Hightstown NJ 08520. The deadline to send in a check, and thereby register for the event, is Monday, January 23rd.
