
Groendyke Room (Office) and Upper Hallway
This room is dedicated to the memory of Lois Groendyke, who was the recording secretary for
the HEW Historical Society for more than 30 years.

Reference Description
A Log Cabin Quilt. Probably an underground quilt, indicating a “safe house” on the
“Underground Railroad” during the 1800s.
B Four-Drawer Pine Dresser, painted and stenciled, from the estate of Huldah Ely. Red work
dresser cover.
C Brown Oak Wardrobe with raised carving on the trim. (Wardrobes were used widely in the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries because most bedrooms had no closets.)
D Paintings of George and Martha Washington, by an unknown artist. During Victorian
times, it was important to decorate houses with pictures such as these.
E Portrait of Benjamin Reed, by an unknown artist.

Not Pictured Mahogany Side chair, purchased by Mrs. Herbert C. Davison in 1925.
Framed linen handkerchief, with many names embroidered on it, made by Mrs. Robert Mangold
of Jamesburg. This handkerchief was the property of Carlotta Davison.
