The Ely House (c. 1850) features room displays on the first floor which
highlight the Society's extensive collection of furniture, textiles and
costumes. Several portraits by Marlatt, a noted mid-nineteenth century
Hightstown artist, are displayed on the walls. The Society bought the Ely
House in 1971.

The Freight Station is a large room that was added to the back of the Ely
house. It is an authentic freight station that once served the Camden &
Amboy Railroad that passed through the center of Hightstown. Now it is
used as a museum display room as well as a meeting room for the Society
and other local groups.  The library is at the north end of the Freight
Station.

The volunteer docents who lead tours of the Ely House first study a book
compiled by the Woman's Club of Hightstown.  Done as a Civic
Improvement Project, the docent's guide provides information on each
museum display item as well as procedures for opening and closing the
Ely House Museum and Sara Hutchinson West Educational Center.  The
information covers local history, architecture and the objects displayed.
